Trust is build on confidentiality and privacy:
Confidentiality is the foundation upon which trust is built. When you come to treatment, you are my only concern. I have no obligations towards others in the social system that surrounds you. The only exception is mandated by law and is for your protection. I must protect you and others from threats of violence, such as suicide.
Privacy is a very important concern for all patients and is closely related to confidentiality. It is a complex subject, because of the many federal and state laws and our professional ethics. If you have any questions I will be happy to help you understand our procedures and your rights.
Rather than having you scroll through pages of legalese, I am directing you a few web-sites that explain your rights as a patient in a very user friendly manner, with appealing graphics that help clarify some of the complexities. These sites are maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
